I really like where this story is heading, but this could really use a editor. The end was pretty un-edited and I had to guess a couple time what Word was missing.

The story as a whole is pretty good.

Devour The Devoured Series Book 1 eBook Shelly Crane Reviews

This book was the most unoriginal thing I've ever read, I have read way better fan-fiction (and that's saying something). I could go on and on about the similarities between TVD and this manuscript but I don't have the energy. I thought I could get something with at least a plot twist but it was so predictable, and so much like the 1st season of TVD, she even references the Salvatore brothers...sigh. The book could not explain to me why being a devourer was bad, so I was lost as to why the love interest was trying to 'be good' i made no sense

Spoilers Her parents died before the start of the book- hence Elena Gilbert, her love interest has an older, evil brother albeit twin,- Stefan and Damon Salvatore; her love interest is trying to turn away from his true nature (honestly I can't say if this is more Edward Cullen or Stefan Salvatore- then again this was written in 2011)

And it goes on- the horde, the story's major antagonists (basically Meyer's Volturi) Her boyfriend who she didn't love- Matt (from TVD- with more anger issues). The goblins are werewolves with their bites being lethal to devourers (the vampires, because they're all the same but in name...however they feed on emotions). They can also get into your dreams...or rather reveries (another thing stolen from TVD). They can persuade humans (more TVD)...at this point in time need I go on.

The characters were all cartoon characters- over the top and unbeilivable. Sara was an ersatz Bonnie and Dee (whatever her name was) was Caroline (again more TVD). I don't know why this has so many good reviews to be honest. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who wants to keep their brain cells.
With most novels/series out there now, I honestly believed this was going to be another Twilight story. Dark and brooding guy... smart and shy girl.. but HELLO!! Boy was I wrong! Ms. Popular, Clara, hangs out with the "in-crowd" at school. She has the football player boyfriend, she gets As in her classes, she's on the spirit team, and basically has the life that we all thought we wanted growing up. Then pops in Eli. He immediately catches her attention and she cannot help feel guilty that she is having saucy dreams with Eli in her sleep and making out with her boyfriend during the day. Eventually, we all know that something happens and they are forced together. I am not going to give anything else away, except that Eli is not a vampire but a Devourer. He feeds off of people's negative emotions... at least he thought until he met Clara.

Mystery, teenage angst, true love, and a little danger will keep you turning the pages! Must Read! I cannot wait to read the next one Consume.
A good paranormal read, with an imaginative twist!

Eli is a devour. Evil. Feeds on emotions.

And he’s drawn to Clara right from the start.

This is in Clara’s POV.

Clara’s parents died, so she lives with a pastor and his family. She goes to school, has a boyfriend, and sits with the “popular” people, thinking they’re her real friends. Boy, does she find out the truth. This is very YA and high school, so if you don’t mind that (which I don’t) then by all means keep on reading!

Now enter Eli.

He helps her see who her real friends are and the truth about her boyfriend, Tate. I really did like Tate at first, how she described their bond and relationship, it made him look possessive, but sweet at the same time. But then he changed and oh how I hated him so much!

This does need a little more editing, but it doesn’t take away from the story at all, so I don’t care!

Couldn’t put down! Great for a freebie!

This gets 4 PIGGIES!!
There are many, many "romantic interludes" in this novel, and they all (and I do mean ALL) feature the guy groaning. It becomes quite clear to the reader that when Ms. Crane uses the word, "groan" it means that the guy is very interested in taking things from the kissing and hugging phase to something more advanced. There are a few problems here. First of all, it would be good to perhaps vary the verbiage. Must he always groan? Maybe he could sigh or moan, or even articulate his feelings with words. I think it is unimaginative and lazy to use a single code word for "all hot at bothered" or excited or frustrated. Second, it is always the guy doing the groaning, when it seems logical that Clara, who is wearing a "promise ring" must be feeling a whole lot of pent-up desire too. I thought that our society had finally realized that women are not just the playthings of men, and that they have interest in and enthusiasm for physical relationships. Young people in chaste relationships can acknowledge their temptations and desires without acting on them.

You could argue that I am paying too much attention to one overused word. However, it is a small illustration of the sexual politics in this story that are off kilter. There is also some sexual violence that goes completely unreported and unpunished. That was not okay. I really wanted to bad boyfriend to receive some punishment.
I really like where this story is heading, but this could really use a editor. The end was pretty un-edited and I had to guess a couple time what Word was missing.

The story as a whole is pretty good.
