Now this is what I like in a YA book; it was action packed, fast paced, full of plot, had believable relationships, and as part of a series has a great build up for something much more in the next books. I liked this book a lot. There were a few things I sort of snickered at, like the fact that the main character was incredibly rich and from a school of other incredibly rich kids and that Mason had such extreme claustrophobia that she couldn't be in a building without the windows being open (people like that rarely function in society, so it seemed a little misplaced to have her be the heroine when she's crippled by the thought of having closed windows in her dorm)... but otherwise I found myself engaged and able to glide through the reading with ease. I'm pretty excited to read the next two books and see what happens; we're left with something of a cliffhanger in this book that's pretty abrupt, but I guess it makes sense seeing as from book #2's blurb this is the opening to a new setting and part of the story.Overall, this was a very nice book that I was able to get for a very nice price used and I rather enjoyed it. It's certainly not my new favorite series or anything, but it was still a worthwhile read that didn't offend or bore me and that did hold my interest and gained my approval, which is always nice.

Starling Starling Trilogy Lesley Livingston Books Reviews
I'm not quite sure how this one seems to have slipped under everyone's radar but I thought it was fantastic once I got a chance to read it. This is new stuff- Norse mythology which I know next to nothing about. Vikings, Asgard, Odin, Thor, Loki and that's about it. I don't know who is good or bad or anything else. But this was a really gripping novel! It starts with a bang with fencing practice being interrupted by a hellacious storm and I do mean hellacious with monsters that look like they come from that very place. And a beautiful naked man wielding a sword that can kill these monsters with one blow. He puts the fencers to shame as they cower behind him, all but Mason Starling, daughter to Gunnar Starling sister to Rothgar and Rory. When you meet Rothgar, you're going to want him to have his own series or at least have a lot more time in the story. Biker guy, very protective of his little sis and able to appease the very volatile and demanding Gunnar Starling, yeah,Fennrys Wolf was very swoon worthy, but so was Rothgar
So, you've got a bunch of Vikings, actually descendants of them, stinking rich and they know how to use swords. Rory and Mason attend an elite prep school that make elite schools we've previous read about look like public school. There's a boy with a distinctly Greek sounding name and his mother and Gunnar get into a fight after the monsters attack the school. Hmmm, Vikings, Greeks....Just think on that. And then there's the Fennrys Wolf who is inexplicably drawn to Mason and she to him. The problem is, Fenn cannot remember anything before that night. He has nightmare and wisps of memories, but nothing is clear to him. And then there are the pesky monsters that are constantly chasing he and Mason, trying to kill them.
I tell you, I was flipping pages so fast I wasn't sure if I had read the last words on the previous pages before I had started the next page. I've never read Lesley Livingston's Wondrous Strange series, but I am going to read it now. She knows how to tell a story. I think I was holding my breath at the end. The characters, Fenn and Mason are revealed to us and yet held back. We don't get to see what they don't know so it's hard to truly know them. But we know the mettle they are made of and they are our kind of people.
I loved this book! I cannot wait for the next in the series. This one ended on a big cliffhanger, but I don't feel like I'm dangling if that makes any sense. You'll just have to read it to see what I mean. I loved the Nordic mythology. I love Valkyries and anything to do with them, though they weren't specifically in this novel, I have a feeling it's only a matter of time. There were other mythologies sprinkled in as well so the lore could become very complex. But in a genre that is full of Greek Gods and Goddesses, this Nordic mythology is a welcome addition! And definitely worth reading for the fast paced action, the family intrigue and Rothgar!

Starling is one of those books that has been sitting on/in my wish list for a long time. It's mythology-- which is a must read for me, so when I discovered it on sale at , I snagged it up. Having been in a reading slump as of late, I was hoping Starling was THE BOOK to bring me back. Sadly though, it didn't. Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Just.. it wasn't what I was hoping for.
Mason, our main leading lady, is a fencer and has dreams of joining the national team. Of course, after that intense first scene where their school was overtaken by some seriously creepy creatures and the appearance of naked Fennrys Wolf, things change. Now, I liked Mason. I thought she was a well-rounded, likeable girl. She's strong, quite and pretty much keeps to herself. Her world was turned upside down, with weird happenings and of course, helping Wolf with his lack of memory. But I am BIG on character connection and I didn't get that.
There are a lot of other POV in the book; and the constant jumping around made it really hard to connect to Mason, or any character. Then again, I loved it because we get to see small pieces of the Prophecy come together little by little; leaving me with the urge to "read one more chapter" to find out what exactly was going on. I thought that was executed pretty well. Obviously, I enjoyed the mythology aspect of the novel, since that was what brought it to my attention in the first place. The author did a great job with explanations and it would be easy to follow for newbies. As far as the romance goes-- It stood more in the background verses taking over the plot in its entirety. HUGE PLUS. It was borderline insta-love though. The L word wasn't necessarily thrown around but there was that unexplainable "connection" that we are told about, not seen for ourselves.
As I said, there was an array of POVs, thus an array of characters. They each play a significant part in the story and I do think it make the novel stronger. Calum, who we are introduced in the beginning, was injured during the attack. After that, we don't see much of him during the middle of the book and comes back towards the end. Mason's brothers, Roth and Rory (I couldn't stand one of them. Mother Rucker was a punk). Heather, who at first showed promise of being the "mean girl", was actually funny and a good friend to Mason. Then of course, Wolf. His POV was my favorite. It's interesting being inside someones head that has some sort of memory loss.
My Peeve-- I have a lot of questions. This could be a good thing, or a bad thing. Usually good, since it pushes us to read the next book in hunt for answers. But in this case... Also, I wanted a little bit more details regarding the "Founding Families".
So, we know they are the "servants" of the Gods/Goddess and what not, but how did this come to be? Why are some OKAY with Ragnarok and others not? Maybe this is obvious to some, but it wasn't to me
Overall- I really enjoyed it. Starling is action packed and intense and a great start to a series. I recommend it. And yes, I will continue with the series because HELLO CLIFFHANGER.
