If you liked Harry Wegley’s first two novels, Hide and Seek and On the Pineapple Express, then you will love Moon Over Maalaea Bay. The beautiful Jennifer Akihara Brandt and her new husband Lee Brandt once again battle a sex trafficking ring using their genius level intelligence, bravery and faith. Jennifer is kidnapped on her honeymoon, and the police and FBI aren’t getting the job done. Lee has to take things into his own hands, but the odds are stacked against him. Jennifer’s Grandfather and her soon-to-be adopted daughter, Katie, are back in the action when they come to Maui to help. Then things get complicated. It’s a good summer read.
I would have like to see more character development in the main characters. It is a personal preference, but when the characters have flaws and doubts, but grow and learn the story becomes more interesting and inspiring to me. Jenn and Lee start out smart, resourceful, and strong of faith, and remain much the same throughout the story. Katie and Grandpa are much the same, however of the other characters do show growth and change.

Third in the author’s Pure Genius series, Moon Over Maalaea Bay, starts with the beautiful relationship between newly-weds Lee and Jennifer. Having escaped all the trials of the previous books, they rejoice in their new marriage,and in love for each other and for God. But things soon start going wrong in this heavenly honeymoon, and Lee’s soon struggling to calm his racing thoughts enough to pray. An Amber Alert locks down the island of Maui. Friends race to the rescue, from the FBI and beyond. And the newly-weds, newly separated, look for clues, listen for slipups, lay plans, and pray, while waiting for that moment when violent action might ensue.
Author H. L. Wegley creates convincing characters with convincing faith, then matches them up against cops and criminals. Add gorgeous scenery, deadly crime, terrorists and spies, then stir. Faith remains part of the plot, always present but never intrusive. God manufactured coincidences offer a pleasing satisfaction absent from the usual oh-good-we-just-found-out feeling of traditional suspense tales. The danger’s real. The tension’s high. The action’s fast and furious. And the story’s a good, clean, thoroughly enjoyable read.
Great drama. Great thrills and suspense. And great faith that prays without condemnation, and heals without fury—it’s a winning combination. And trust is a wonderful message, well-taught in this well-plotted tale.

Starting just a few hours after the previous book (The Pineapple Express) ended, we find Lee and Jennifer Brandt in Hawaii for their honeymoon. Looking forward to their first night as man and wife they were shocked to find their hotel room had been broken into. Strolling through the Kihei shops, Jennifer is so thankful for Lee in her life and the fact that he introduced her to the Lord. BUT who is the mysterious caller? Is it really their friend Peterson's (FBI) assistant? Whilst Lee goes to buy them some lattes, Jennifer looks to replace her whale necklace that she lost a year ago. When Lee returns, Jennifer is gone!
This is the beginning of another fantastic suspense featuring Lee, Jennifer, their soon to be adopted daughter Katie whom they rescued from the traffickers in the Pineapple Express and Jennifer's grandfather, who despite being 72 holds a sixth degree, black Karate belt and still knows how to kick! You will not want to put this book down!
Due to Jennifer, 26, looking so much younger (15-16) an amber alert is issued, thanks to an observant witness, before Lee even arrives back on the scene. Jennifer's abductors were not expecting this. Will it help?
Franklin James lost $50 million last year thanks to Jennifer's sabotage of the trafficking ring. With Jennifer sale-able as "unused merchandise" the plan is to sell her to a prince. Nguyen, evil personified, says that they need to let Lee live torturing him with false photos of Jennifer in a brothel in Thailand. The human traffickers want to send a strong message to those tempted to interfere. Franklin knows letting Lee live is a big risk to take.
Jennifer's first priority in all this? To talk to the Lord and ask for His guidance. She knows she needs to attempt an escape but needs the Lord to show her how and when. Lee, naturally, is distraught. He is frustrated with the police and FBI in their seemingly slow handling of the case so decides to do his own investigating. He feels God asking him "Do you trust me? Even in the light of this?" What does Peterson know that he is not letting on? Which country wants Jennifer and may offer an even bigger price than the prince? Why?
The hunt and chase is on with Katie and Granddad flying over to help. Who is Anya? How does Katie know her? How will it all turn out? Enjoy this well-written, fast paced story that will keep you reading to the end.
I agree with the author that this is the best written in the series. However, I like them all.
Relationship with God is a giant plus in each book Wegley writes.
